We are the member of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors that is Hong Kong's premier body representing professional directors working together to promote good corporate governance and to contribute towards advancing the status of Hong Kong, both in China and internationally. As corporate governance is crucial to the development of companies and the economy at large and as directors are ultimately responsible for corporate governance, HKIoD encourages all directors to remain up-to-date with director practices and advocates the pursuit of continual professional development by directors.
As our goal is to be the number one in the business ethics of our business sector, we have chosen number of corporate social responsibility actions to carry and develop around the year.
First of all, our goal is to create our staff members a good personal growth, high work satisfaction and a feeling of being a valuable team member. Internal hierarchy has been built low to ensure the direct interaction and quick support to each of our team member. We have changed from 6 days’ work week into a 5-working days a week to ensure our staff members have enough personal time beside the work. Our organization is welcoming for open discussions and idea sharing ensuring our team members feels they have a say.
As part of our corporate culture, we encourage our team member to join the forces to create good for the community, too. Caring corporate culture is motivating and inspiring.
Our company owner Dr. Alex K. Yasumoto is a founder of Given Co., a Hong Kong based investment company that started to invest in Hong Kong’s prime real estate market in 1986. It has always been Dr. Yasumoto's philosophy as taught by his father, that he should not make money only for himself, but also for the society. By following these important values, Dr. Yasumoto has become known for his active participation in the Charity work in Hong Kong. Among his numerous charity actions, Dr. Alex K Yasumoto showed special devotion with Hong Kong Chinese University. In 2006, Dr. Yasumoto made a contribution of $2,000 million yen for the establishment of the Kamenori Foundation to promote student exchanges between Japan and the Asia Pacific Region. The Yasumoto International Exchange Scholarship Scheme is the largest exchange scholarship scheme ever established in CUHK.
Following the genuine intentions of Dr. Yasumoto, WEC has paid attention to elder, disable and children. We are the continuously supporting the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra by providing our financial support for the disable child drummers particularly.
This year we participated 2011 Community Chest Corporate Challenge with over 1,400 runners from 39 organisations. In a year 2010 Community Chest Corporate Challenge raised more than HK$5 million for the needy.
This year our biggest charity mission took a place on December 16 - 19th, 2011. As a main organizer, we united the forces with number of key organizations to create a lifetime experience for over 700 underprivileged children of Hong Kong. With the spirit of winter and Christmas, a real Santa Claus from Lapland Finland flew to visit the underprivileged and critically sick children by visiting Ronald McDonald House, Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital , San Wui Commercial Society School, Fresh Fish Traders’ School, HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre, Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service and HOPE Worldwide Community Centre. Each visit included storytelling, singing, games, exchange of Christmas cards and photo taking opportunities. Everyone got their personal Christmas presents too. The whole mission brought much of joy and happiness to the children, their parents, the nurses, doctors, teachers, volunteers and our own team members.
We are deeply involved with the international co-operation and networking. As part of the involvement, we are actively giving our support for the work and events of Chambers of Commerce residing in Hong Kong. As a matter of fact, we are the home centre for the European Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong and our General Manager Ms. Tina Wah is a board director of Finnish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. In addition, we are corporate members of Swedish Chamber of Commerce, Spanish Camber of Commerce, Finland Hong Kong Trade Association, Finnair Plus partner network and a partner of FinChi, the Finland China Innovation Centre.
We have set ourselves a goal to become a Green Centre during the year 2012. We are already paying extra attention to recycling and energy consumption. We have opened the discussions with WWF to develop an internal corporate programme to support the work of WWF in Hong Kong. In addition, internal Green Centre study was finalized in the fall 2011 and is now ready for the action.
